Morten Messerschmidt rages over habit among many Danes: More than stupid
Coffee is no longer just a hot inventory – it has become a cross -border folk sport.
At least if you ask the staff at Fleggaard. The German border store chain reports a sale that is almost bubbling over: an increase of 76 percent in just six months.
And the explanation is simple. According to the chain’s director, this is about one thing: Danes want a good deal. And they obviously get it – just not at home.
Because while the coffee is smoking down the shopping cart south of the border, the steam rises at the Danish People’s Party’s Morten Messerschmidt. On X he puts words on his coffee-coloring:
« In just six months, coffee sales south of the border have risen by 76 percent! And why? Because the government is taxing the Danes on their knees – and making a regular cup of coffee a luxury item »
Messerschmidt has counted on the figures and claims that the state puts DKK 7.67 on top of the price per year. kilogram of coffee. It is due to an old charge from the 1930s, when the beans were considered luxury – and it still lives in the best of the best.
Combine it with 25 percent Danish VAT, and it’s not hard to see why many people choose to refuel in Germany, where VAT on groceries is only seven percent – and the coffee tax completely absent.
At Dansk Erhverv you recognize the story of the historical tax, but any change has not been on the wallpaper. Not until now, at least.
