« Morning Diary »: Don’t forget Ithaca. Who (not) wants to be in Europe. After the protests – more protests

« Don’t ever forget Ithaca, » the Greek poet Konstantinos Cavafis reminded in his poems about the long path to wisdom. In Greek mythology, the king of Ithaca – with the help of the gods – returned home after decades of obstacles to win the island and his wife again. The modern Odysseus (In the version of the Italian director, Uzure Pazolini), left alone, fights pain and guilt in the name of the most important return – to the feeling of who is.
And since history loves joke with repetitions, the world is also in the position of taking steps back to understand itself. For Europe the situation does not seem optimistic at all – According to experts, what is reminded of the crossroads of the eve of World War II. The question is whether countries will withstand the sowing doubt in democracy, and the bet is freedom and peace, however ridiculous it may sound in the third decade of the 21st century.
For Bulgaria – the country where the word Euro -Atlantic is an insultthe light in the tunnel comes from the fast train. Moreover, lawlessness continues in all directionsas the dissolution of the Party of the Sword Party shows, and attempts to restore it. If there is a (paradoxical) soothing, it is that others are in a similar situation. For example Hungary, whose Prime Minister Victor Orban systematically stands against community principleswhile solving its economic problems. And the hope is that the EU gives signs of being able to cope with friendly fire.
Whatever happens, this morning the Christian world will wake up with the news of good news And the promise of salvation. Smile with faith in the new beginning. And celebrate your mothers’ day (even if you did it on March 8th).
Euro -Atlantic and Grantraine
In public speaking in Bulgaria over the last year, the use of the word Euro -Atlantic has become an expression of insult, belittling, contempt or antipathy – this states one of the conclusions in the annual report of the NGO Foundation for Humanitarian and Social Research, which has been following the spread of propaganda in the country for years. According to the survey in 2024, civil society suffered at least two directions:
- The culmination of the thesis about the « servants of the West » and « the Grantaji » (thanks to the Renaissance and its bill for foreign agents under the Russian model).
- The Euro -Atlanticism against which there was « literally an attempt to abduct the meaning ». An example is the association of the term with the name of the leader of « MRF – New Beginning » by Delyan Peevski.
The study found that the cases of joint use of the word Euro -Atlantic and Peevski’s name in the online media space jumped sharply: from one to 7 publications in 2023 to each third article in 2024. More about the report – hereS
At the crossroads
« Europe is located at a new crossroads similar to the one since the 1930s, » warns In an interview with Dnevnik Professor of Political Science at McGil University Prof. Maria Popova. According to her, the community has been revoked by the idea that freedom should be defended as Russia is waging a hybrid war to sow discord and doubt in democracy.
