More will be able to work until they turn 72 years

Many will continue in the job even after they turn 70. Until now, the rules have put obstacles in the way of it. The government will change that.

When my grandparents were young, you were « older » when you were in the 60s. This is no longer the case – fortunately. We are healthier, we live longer and we have a safe and good working life today that makes people both want and can work longer. Then we must have a regulatory framework.

We should not force anyone to work until they are 72, but those who want to be allowed to.

Therefore, we have proposed for the Storting to raise the age limit in the state from 70 to 72 years. We will also remove corporate age limits under 72 years in companies and municipalities.

These are important changes that will give more seniors the opportunity to continue in working life when they wish. It also means that there will mainly be one age limit in working life.

Many people want to work after the age of 70, but today’s rules prevent them. Requirements that internal age limits should be practiced consistently today means that in some cases employers must terminate employees they would like to keep. It loses both the employer and the employee.

With the changes we propose, employers can no longer terminate employees who want to continue working, just because they have reached the age of 70. Seniors have valuable experience and expertise, and obviously a lot to contribute even after the age of 70.

The proposals come after the pension settlement in 2024, where there was agreement to raise the age limit in the state and assess corporate age limits. The Storting will now handle the matter before the summer. If the proposal is adopted, the changes can take effect from the New Year, and exceptions should still be possible in positions where lower age limit is required.

The need for labor is increasing. Then we have to take care of people with work and ability. With these changes, more people will have the opportunity to work longer.
