More than half of passengers of airlines flies without baggage

As Kommersant found out, on Russian flights, the proportion of passengers is growing, flying only with manual treasury, including abroad. This indicator does not change only among Aeroflot and charters, whose customers fly on vacation. According to the observations of carriers, students and passengers of short flights travel more often without luggage. Experts note that minimization of baggage is an international trend, since it is profitable to save time on loading and transport commercial goods.

On average, from 50% to 70% of passengers of airlines fly without baggage, most of the “Kommersant” surveyed carriers grow, but depends on the direction. The greatest dynamics was recorded in Redwings, where, according to the results of the first quarter of 2025, 61% of passengers on the internal lines (UVL) issued tickets for the tariff without baggage. In 2024, these were 55%, in 2023 – 59%, in 2022 – 36%. The airline fixes the increase in demand for a flageling tariff and in international areas (MVL): according to the results of the first quarter, the share of such travelers remained at 2024 – 49%, in 2023 – 38%, in 2022 – 23%.

In S7 it is said that in 2019, the share of passengers without baggage was 60%, now their number exceeded two -thirds. But, they added in the company, half of the passengers who bought tickets without baggage buy it when registering. In the « Ural Airlines » around the country 63%fly without baggage, which corresponds to the level of 2022. On foreign flights, the proportion of passengers with a manual board increased from 7% to 15%. Smartavia, without opening accurate data, noted that the share of passengers with a manual board « significantly exceeds the share of passengers with luggage. »

Aeroflot reported that the share of passengers flying without baggage remains significant. According to the results of the first quarter of 2025, the share of VOL has not changed to the same period last year: 46%. The share of passengers without baggage for the period decreased from 32% to 21%.

Its specificity is traditionally among charter carriers flying to resort directions. Azurair confirmed that in their case, “passengers without baggage on flights are rare”, since tourists mostly fly on trips lasting from the week.

The growth of non -baging armor is also fixed for the purchase of air tickets.

According to the T-Bank Travel service, the number of international passengers flying without luggage from 2022 to 2024 increased from 43% to 50%. On internal flights, on the contrary, the number of such passengers decreased from 81% to 77%.

Air Siles observes the growth of flabbying armored reservations to international flights during 2025 to 58%, while in 2023–2024 the indicator did not exceed 42%. On domestic flights, the share of flagelled passengers decreased to 72% against 74–77% in 2024 and 2023.

Where with things to fly

In T-Bank’s travels, according to the results of 2024, the most noticeably flagrant trend manifested itself in popular directions: 91%of their customers flew to St. Petersburg without baggage, 85%, 71%in Sochi. “The shorter the journey and closer is the departure date, the less chance that the passenger will decide to take a suitcase,” said there. According to the service, on internal flights that last less than two hours, only 13% of passengers make baggage, and if the flight lasts more than five hours, the indicator increases to 51%. So, in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Vladivostok prefer to take baggage of 87%, 78% and 70% of passengers, respectively.

The greatest changes have occurred in popular foreign tourist directions.

The share of traveling to Thailand with luggage fell from 79% in 2022 to 44% in 2024. The decrease is also recorded in Turkey – from 40% to 29%, in the Maldives – from 71% to 56% for the same period. At the same time, in countries where a longer stay or luggage is “socially determined”, a high proportion of those who take the suitcase is preserved. For example, in Japan, South Korea and Tajikistan fly with a luggage of 93–100%.

Aeroflot confirms that the high share of luggage flights is preserved both on the Far Eastern flights, where it is close to 100%and on the MVL to the countries of Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Baging leaders – Hong Kong, Kyrgyzstan, Egypt and China.

Azurair noted that the baggage of vacationers “gets heavier” on flights home: for example, in 2024 the average weight of baggage from Russia to Turkey was 10 kg, and back – 13 kg.

The Ural Airlines said that the most baggage had flights to Tajikistan and vice versa (99%), Kyrgyzstan (93%) and Uzbekistan (52%). 54% of passengers fly to China and back with luggage, 51% in the UAE. The least baggage falls on flights to Armenia (28%), Azerbaijan (25%) and Turkey (15%).

The lightest travelers

Aeroflot calculated that most often passengers aged 25 to 44 years (42%) travel without luggage, while the smallest share is among people over 65 years old (33%). At the same time, in the summer, passengers with luggage plan trips much earlier, and passengers without luggage with the depth of reservation remains stable at the level of 20–25 days: “This may indicate a more spontaneous nature of travels light.” T-Bank’s “Travels” also note that customers under 25 years old are especially striving for “lightness and mobility”: in this category, only 15% took baggage in internal directions. In the age categories 45–54 years, almost a quarter of passengers travel with a suitcase. The service also confirms the tendency to the spontaneity of such customers: almost every third flagrant passenger – 38% – acquires tickets in ten days or less. Among those who fly with luggage, there are half such spontaneous travelers – only 19%.

Smartavia add that along with students, pensioners also fly lightly. The S7 noted that passengers from the corporate segment are preferred more often than in retail. Redwings do not observe the differences in age: the average age of the passenger with reservation without baggage in 2024 is 37 years, with luggage – 39 years. But the depth of reservation at the non -minute tariff in 2025, they added there, “beats records” – 40 days, in past years it was 21–26 days.

22.7 million people

He compiled a passenger flow of airlines in the first quarter of 2025, according to the Federal Air Transport Agency.

The baggage reduction trend has reached Russia from foreign low -cost airlines with a little late, says Ilya Shatilin, editor -in -chief of the Frequentflyers.ru portal: “In order to withstand competition with Western low -cost airlines, full -service companies launched light -long tariffs much earlier.” In the Russian Federation, the consumer model of flights is also changing: “There are no more situations in which a Soviet person just in case takes a big suitcase with him.” In addition, in Russia and the world on flights there are more and more “zemirs that are not inclined to accumulate either in everyday life or in flight.” The desire to save without luggage is also profitable and the carriers themselves, the expert adds. Firstly, companies earn on those who buy this service at airports, and secondly, commercial transportation of goods for them is much more profitable taking into account the growth of E-commerce.

Airlines around the world stimulate passengers to minimize baggage to reduce the costs of ground services and earn on cargo transportation, confirms the general director of Friendly Avia Support Alexander Lanetsky. Statistics also directly depend on the direction: with transatlantic flights or in resort directions, baggage will be at least 50% – from one suitcase for the family. And on short intra -European flights, the expert says, about 80% of passengers fly with a manual housekeeper.
