More than every fourth Dane wants it: Yet it is deteriorating
The vast majority of people in Denmark live in a neighborhood – side by side with people they have not chosen themselves. For most people, a good neighborhood is crucial because it creates security and can prevent burglary.
It writes the Crime Prevention Council in a Pressure Via Ritzau.
Still, more than one in four feel that the neighborhood has gotten worse over the past five years and many want a stronger community. It shows a new study from the Crime Prevention Council and TrygFonden.
A strong neighboring community is not just about cosiness over the hedge – it has a real impact on security, well -being and burglary.
« We know that good neighboring relationships and good neighborhood can help prevent burglary and strengthen the security of a neighborhood. When neighbors know and help each other, it creates an environment where it is more difficult for twenty to operate, » says Emil Rethmeier Madsen, analyst at the Crime Prevention Council.
Trust must be strengthened
One of the biggest challenges for the neighborhood today is that more people choose to look after themselves and that the confidence in the neighbors is weakened. According to the study, almost four out of 10 find that there is no high degree of confidence in their neighborhood – perhaps because they simply do not know each other well enough.
The study also shows that trust plays the most crucial role in the experience of a good neighborhood. It is important to know that you can get help from your neighbors – e.g. in connection with a burglary.
One of the things that can help strengthen relationships are neighborhood activities. In some neighborhoods, traditions such as Fastelavn and Road Party are a regular part of the community. In others, there are no social activities – but perhaps a desire to strengthen the neighborhood.
