More than 8,500 occurrences due to bad weather

Continental Portugal registered 8,500 occurrences related to bad weather-with rain and strong wind, which caused trees and infrastructure to fall, forcing the cutting of roads and railway lines-until 20h this Thursday.

The most affected subregion remains Lisbon and Tagus Valley, with more than five thousand occurrences (61% “of activity throughout the continental territory related to adverse meteorological conditions”), followed by the center (with 1,701 occurrences).

The largest number of occurrences is related to the fall of trees (4,628), followed by the fall of structures (2,178). There is a record of 1,501 road cleaning interventions. According to Civil Protection, 28,981 operational were supported by 9,967 vehicles.

The most intense gust of wind was located at 1:30 am on Thursday at Cabo da Roca and reached 169.2 kilometers per hour, according to the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA).

The storm “Martinho” made fifteen people be displaced and 13 others displaced, having already returned the house. A woman was seriously injured in Sintra – hit by a tree while walking on foot – and is hospitalized at the São Francisco Xavier Hospital, with a “very reserved” prognosis.

The Lisbon Metropolitan has announced that it will keep open, from Thursday to Friday, the stations of Santa Apolónia, Oriente, Rossio and Odivelas due to the weather conditions.

According to Civil Protection, the rain and strong wind scenario will remain at least until Saturday. « Some displeasure » may register, but « extreme wind phenomena » may arise, particularly on the coast and in the central and southern areas of the country.

In Brussels, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro assured that the government will be quick to support populations affected by bad weather. However, in a statement, the Ministry of Infrastructure has ensured that it is following the effects of the storm and “taking action to solve and minimize the impact” of the weather.

Already the mayor of Lisbon revealed to journalists that six injured last night only in the municipality of Lisbon and that 22 roads are still conditioned due to bad weather.

“We registered six injured (one municipal police, a PSP, two firefighters and two citizens),” said Carlos Coins, recognizing that “it was a very difficult night for the city.
