More than 245 museums and public life makers / day will open its doors to Museum Night
“The popularity of museum night traditions in Latvia has been strengthened and apparently a favorite of the audience over the past twenty years. Statistics show that museum visits are increasing daily – last year, compared to 2023, it has increased by about 30 thousand. The latest study of cultural consumption and participation is also evidenced by the fact that there was much more to visit the Museum Night in the Cities of Latvia than in the capital.
« The European Museum Night in Latvia has been going on since 2005, but it is still an event that gives us inspiration for us museum staff, various creative solutions for communication with visitors and attracts museums public interest. The unifying theme of this year’s Museum Night – our value stories – is chosen, inviting both state, municipal and private museums and other public organizers to emphasize the most important values in their collections to tell them to the public.
More than 92 crops are invited to visitors in Riga and its neighborhood Museum Night, showing an increase in number compared to last year, when 80 museum night sights were recorded here.
“The Latvian National History Museum will invite visitors to all four locations on its museum – Museum repository Dzegužkalns, Dauders Sarkandaugava, the People’s Front Museum in the Old Town and Riga Castle. In the regions, binding activities will take place in 153 locations. Vidzeme people and guests of the region will be able to attend 43 cultural sites on May 17th and night, in Kurzeme Museum Night will be open to visitors in 46 locations, in Latgale – 40 places and in Zemgale – 24 crops.
« We are pampered with the Museum Night at this long period of time. The number of interested parties fluctuates around 2000 every year, » says Gundars Plešs, chief specialist of the Limbaži Museum. « Of course, this is very dependent on the offer, we try to keep interest. This year we will invite you to enjoy a contrasting offer – from a trip at midnight bus and dance in the castle wall to sauna and a contemplating poetry.

On May 18, International Museum Day was celebrated in Europe, announced by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) for the first time in 1977. Latvia has been celebrating this day since 1978.
In 1999, the French Ministry of Culture and Communications invited European museums to organize a joint international campaign Museum Spring, Who later turned into a museum night – in the campaign with the aim of introducing museums to the people who do not visit museums on a daily basis. A few years later, Museum Night became one of the activities related to the celebration of International Museum Day.
So far, the number of museums has been involved in the Museum Night Visit Museum every year, as well as other public life makers – manors, exhibition halls, libraries, public administrations, etc. The basic offers of the Museum Night activities are for free.
