More than 1000 demos at the same time

Usually she would have brought her two children with her. But she wasn’t comfortable with the thought. « I was afraid, » admits Lara Kalin: « America is not on the way. » This is precisely why the nursing student absolutely wanted to take part in the protest. And she wanted to be in the capital. « It is important that we are as many as possible, » she says: « The world has to see us. »

So Kalin drove from Philadelphia to Washington for three hours on this gray Saturday morning, where she is now with a poster: « This is the country of the free. Trump is – like almost every weekend – on the golf course in Florida when the democratic MP Jamie Raskin steps on the small stage below the Washington Monument. « No moral person wants a dictator for whom everything has a price, but nothing has a value, » the politician calls into the crowd. But many participants cannot hear Raskin on the wide area. A striking number of participants do not want to be photographed or remain anonymous – a clear reference to the changed climate among a president who brings the FBI against its political opponents. Kirsten Olson does not want to be intimidated by such worries. « Our country moves in a dangerous direction, » she complains: « If we don’t do anything, it gets worse and worse. » The four -fold grandmother holds up a poster. « America Elects Presidents, Not Kings », it says: America chooses president, no kings!

The demonstrators are concerned about the future of the United States

« We are at a scary turning point, » says Kalin. The prospective nurse and mother of two five and seven-year-old daughters are primarily concerned with abortion rights and health protection: “This whole false information about vaccinations can lead to the fact that population immunity drops. That is worrying.  » Otherwise, she wonders what kind of world her children grow up in: « America always stood for innovation. Now they throw out the scientists, hand over the state to the rich and get out of world trade. » The young woman fears: “The rest of the globe will move on and we will remain.
