More speed cameras and tolerance limit is being abolished: Wallonia is becoming more stricter for speed devils

So far, Flanders was stricter than Wallonia when it arrived at speed controls. But that changes. The tolerance limit is abolished in Wallonia.

To relieve the police and public prosecutors, flash cameras can be set so that they only flash from a certain speed. In the Charleroi district, for example, some speed cameras can exceed the technical tolerance to 10 km/h, whether you are driving in a zone 30, 50, 70 or 90. That means that when the maximum speed is 50 kilometers per hour and you drive past a speed camera at 60 kilometers per hour, you will not get a fine.

In 2023, then Walloon Minister of Mobility Valérie de Bue (MR) announced her intention to put an end to that tolerance margin. This is already the case for 36 speed cameras along highways. But now people are going to get a little extra. « We are ready for phase 2, » says Attorney of the King of Bergen Gilles Dupuis. Other cameras are also being adjusted. « The tolerance margin is reduced to zero. »

Black points

About how many cameras are involved and at which locations, that does not and cannot say that. A meeting with all actors is planned on 21 March. It will be looked at which cameras must be adjusted first. The new radars with zero tolerance will be chosen from a list of the Walloon Agency for Road Safety. The police were also asked to give up on 'black points'. (Read more under the photo)

Yet, for example, anyone who drives 55 km per hour in a zone 50 will still not be fined. Because in addition to the tolerance margin, there is a technical correction that is determined by law, says An Berger of the federal police. That margin exists to build a buffer against any measurement errors through the device. The margin is 6 km/h under 100 km/h. If the fixed speed is higher than 100 km/h, a correction of 6 percent applies to the measured speed.

Extra speed cameras

It is not the only measure in Wallonia to reduce the number of speeding violations. The Walloon Minister of Mobility recently decided that 150 extra speed cameras will be placed. Where exactly, must still be determined. According to the Walloon administration, 436 speed cameras from the new generation along regional roads are already.
