More recycling of batteries and portable batteries

The recycling of portable batteries increased by 22% by 2024, compared to 2023. The numbers are from the electrão, which last year collected 412 tons of material taken from electrical equipment, commands, toys, mobile phones and computers.

According to data released Thursday by Electrão-Waste Management Association, in industrial batteries, the increase was around 7%. Last year, the collection and recycling of these devices increased from 891 tons to 957 tons.

« In global terms, the electron sent 1,369 tons of batteries and batteries used over 2024 for recycling, which represents a 12%increase over the previous year, » the association said.

Last year, collection points grew 21%, totaling 8,735 locations across the country, plus 1,523 compared to the previous year.

According to a statement from Electrão, all stores that market these products “have to ensure the resuming” equipment delivered by the citizen, considering that it is “an equally important channel with enormous potential, which can help catapult the collection”.

« Batteries' recycling is crucial to recovering critical resources such as lithium and cobalt, essential for the ecological and digital transition from the European Union, » said Eletrão.

Currently 90% of the refinement of the so -called 'rare lands' from which these minerals are extracted in China, which makes recycling “a key strategy” to reduce external dependence and reinforce European sovereignty, the association argues.

The goal of the European Union is to ensure that recycling provides 25% of the necessary critical raw materials to create a more sustainable flow of essential materials.
