An 80-year-old cyclist died on Sunday afternoon in the Stormestraat in Waregem. He became unwell and fell. Afterwards he was hit, but research shows that heart failure is the cause of death.
Shortly before noon, the elderly man drove through the Stormestraat towards the center when he fell at the intersection with the Verhelststraat. Later it would turn out that he had problems with the heart while cycling.
The driver of a Mercedes, a 75-year-old lady, just wanted to turn the Stormestraat from the side street and noticed the man too late. She crashed with her car against the fallen cyclist. The emergency services still rushed on the spot, but there was no help anymore.

Superficial injuries
After the accident, the public prosecutor appointed a traffic expert and a law doctor to investigate the circumstances. At first it was not clear how the cyclist fell and how he died. The first findings showed that his injuries were only superficial due to the collision.
According to the law doctor, there may be a heart failure, so that the elderly man fell and eventually died. The driver of the Mercedes, who was not driving too fast and was not under the influence, therefore has no responsibility for the particularly tragic accident.
The findings by the experts took hours. The police placed a tent to withdraw the body from view and closed the intersection with a police ribbon. Passers -by had to make a detour.
