There has been a war in Ukraine since 2014. In the east of the country, pro-Russian separatists, which had declared parts of the country to be independent, fought against the government’s army. The separatists control parts of the regions – called Oblasten – Luhansk and Donetsk. The war had started after the conflict over the future orientation of Ukraine escalated. In Kiev, the Euromaidan protests had demonstrated for an approximation to the EU and the signing of an association agreement.

In this unstable location, the annexation of the Crimea occurred. Suddenly soldiers appeared there without a badge and forced a referendum that is not recognized internationally. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin gave at the end of 2014that Russian soldiers were involved in the occupation of the Crimea. Ukraine continues to see the Crimea than its territory, but control has had Russia since then.
