Monument from an Icelandic writer in the Himalayas

A group of scientists yesterday set up a memorial to the Yala glacier in the Himalayas, 5,000 meters above sea level, with imprinted text by Icelandic writer Andra Snæ Magnason.

More than fifty people, including B.Spokes and glacier experts from Bhutan, China, India and Nepal, met with a beautiful ceremony by the International Agency Icimod (The International Center for Integrated Mountain Development) yesterday, where Buddhist ceremony took place, scientists performed speeches, and two granite monuments were taken at the root of the glacier where it stands today.

In addition to being in memory of the glacier, the monuments are a reminder of about 54,000 other glaciers in the Himalayas that are about to disappear, but they are a water cage for about a billion inhabitants.

More than fifty people gathered at a beautiful ceremony in which Buddhist ceremony took place, scientists attended speeches and the monuments themselves were unveiled.

« Message for the future »

Messages from two world-renowned writers are imprinted on either monument, on the one hand from Andra Snæ Magnason and on the other, Nepali-Canadian author Manushree Thapa, and they both gave their work to strengthen climate action.

« Message for the future: The Yala glacier is one of 54,000 glaciers of Hindu Kush Himalaja mountains, but most of them are expected to disappear in this century due to climate change. This monument is to admit that we know what is happening and what needs to be done.

« Yala, where the gods dream in the mountain heights, where the cold is wonderful. Impressive Thapa.

The Yala Jökull has decreased by 66% and hoped by 784 meters since it was first measured around 1970. Yala is scheduled to have the first glacier Nepal to disappear in full.

The glacier is the first in Asia and the third worldwide to carry its own version of this message from Andra. A message from him is also found where the glacier and was, here in Iceland, and where the Ayoloco glacier was in Mexico, but activities took place there in 2019 and 2021.

Similar activities have taken place for the Pizol glacier in Switzerland in 2019, the Clark glacier in Oregon, USA in 2020 and the Basodino glacier in Switzerland in 2021.

The glaciers of the world « our lifeline »

About 100 glaciers have been trained on the Yala glacier since Icimod began training on the glacier around 2011, but it has been used as a research area for about 50 years.

More than nine trillion tonnes of ice have melted since 1975, which is equal to 2.72 meters thick ice cave the size of India.

« I am hoping that we can notify more people, and share what we have learned and experienced by watching the glacier, especially with those who cannot come here and see it themselves, and show that these and other glaciers in the world are our lifeline, »
