Montenegro says that absence or reduction of IRS refund is “for a good reason

The president of the PSD said on Sunday that the absence or reduction of IRS reimbursement is « for a good reason. » Luís Montenegro defends tax retention closest to what is being charged.

« There are Portuguese and Portuguese who today have a reality that is not the best, it is true. Refund is not exactly the same as it was before, but we need to say seriously that it is for a good reason, » said Montenegro.

In his intervention at the end of AD’s list heads in Curia, Anadia municipality, the current Prime Minister argued that he will always try “that the retention of labor income (IRS) are as close as possible to the tax that is expected to be charged” when refunding.

According to Luís Montenegro, the reduction of retention rates explain that there are Portuguese today who, after the delivery of the IRS statement, are faced with a reduction or absence of the reimbursement that would be expected.

For the PSD president, the government, by changing retention rates at the source, “decided to be more transparent and decided to be fairer with taxpayers” since “what is not fair is that we, as a rule, have more than what we will charge, and that will inhibit the person throughout the year of having the performance that truly is yours”.

For Luís Montenegro, quoted by the Lusa agency, the previous situation was “taxpayers to fund and lend money to the state,” noting that even if some say this could be considered a savings, “it is a forced savings”.

« People have the right to have their income and their money. The policy of this government is this. (…) If what the PS means when it calls this trick will retain more money to Portuguese taxpayers than the one who then intends to charge at the end of the year, then have the courage to say this to Portuguese taxpayers and say, ‘We’ll increase the IRS retention tables, » he said.

Earlier, Luís Montenegro had accused PS secretary-general Pedro Nuno Santos, of not being coherent in claiming that that party had defended a low IRS and retention rates, accusing the socialists of defending « something and its opposite. »
