Mocking on a lumpfish, according to Ingolf
« Yes, it’s just a lot of mockery. I’ve never experienced such fishing in such a few networks. I just don’t understand this advice compared to the fishing that is on the tickets. It’s just that, » says Ingólfur H. Árnason, a lumpfish fisherman in Morgunbladid today. He makes the lumpfish boat Ásdís ÞH-136 from Húsavík and has more decades of experience in lumpfish fishing.
He expresses great concern about the status of lumpfish fishing, both because of the MRI’s advice, quota settings and the framework of the fishing in general. « Building lumpfish advice on what people get in a trawler stands no opinion. This is just not a recognized method and it is excluded that they know how much lumpfish is in the sea. It is at least my opinion. »
At the end of March, the MRI announced that the Agency suggested that no more than 2,760 tonnes of lumpfish should be caught this spring, which is 32% less than the agency advised for last year’s season.
Jobs decreased
« It came as a big surprise to me that there would be cuts, I thought it would be normal to add about two thousand tonnes compared to last year’s allocation, » says Ingólfur, who claims to have nine tonnes after the 35 tonnes he was allocated, but the lumpfish was a quota.
As a result, the contraction in the advice has been that two jobs have disappeared, but Ingólfur has usually had three sailors with him in the season. « Last season I landed 103 tonnes and used them only part of the days. »
What will you have to reach the quota for a long time?
« Of course, it depends on how many networks you put in the ocean, but this is not a few days after this scare is over. »
Collapse
The position of many is very bad because of the contraction, according to Ingolf, as fishing has to cover costs. « I have to see how this will happen to boats that were allocated three or five tonnes. I can’t imagine they are going to download this. This probably goes into some type transfers or some kind of confusion and never comes ashore. Then people take off. »
He believes that many who received little fishing permits rent as much as possible. « That’s if someone wants to rent, otherwise it just burns inside. There is no one to start in any endurance to pick up five tons. »
He says the fishery has been concrete when the lumpfish sailors began to be required to return whole lumpfish. He points out that the regulations that were set on how to work on lumpfish and lumpfish roe had been so strict that the unicorns simply did not have the capacity to meet the requirements made. Thus, the number of buyers decreased significantly and they are far fewer than 20 years ago when the domestic market was for the catch.
« I sold Ora for many years barrels but then they stopped standing in a lumpfish. Then I went for a fish purchase and then they stopped. Then I started selling companies in Stykkishólmur and he called me the day I was going to lay and said I couldn’t take off, but referred to me. »
Price dropped
In addition, Ingólfur says no product development has taken place with the lumpfish, which in previous years was considered to deliver high quality caviar. « The pricing is glorious. Cod prices have risen, but the price of the lumpfish is lower than it was five years ago.
The market always managed this, if much was provided one year, the market collapsed and fewer hunted the following year and thus this fishing developed. So everything goes into shit with this government management system and Hafro. Have destroyed this market and fishing. The whole environment of these fisheries is just down to the stage. «
