MMKF-2025: Festival program
On April 17, the 47th Moscow International Film Festival (MMKF) starts, which will last until April 24. About 200 films will be shown on its sites. Comments Julia Shahelman.
This year, the MMKF celebrates its conditional 90th anniversary-it first took place in 1935 and was then called the Soviet film festival in Moscow. Then, however, his story was interrupted for as many as 24 years, so that the serial number of the review this year is not round, and no festive events are provided in the program. Much more attention is paid to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War: the date is dedicated to two retrospectives, the opening film and one of the paintings of the contest “Russian premieres”.
Submitting the program of the festival, its program director Ivan Kudryavtsev, by tradition, already reported on the growth of all sorts of indicators.
According to him, this year more than 1,600 applications were submitted at the MMKF, which is 17% more than in the past. However, the films will eventually show less: 200 against last year’s 240.
And all because the selection has become stricter, so the quality of the presented paintings, if so, should be higher than the previous one.
“In the competitive programs we have 25 world international prime ministers and 50 participating countries, 24-from the list of unfriendly states,” emphasized Mr. Kudryavtsev. “Top has practically not changed: in the first place Russia – 122 premieres, then China – 20 paintings. In the main competition this year, three Russian paintings. « Two in one life, not counting the dog » Andrei Zaitsev, whose “Blocade Diary” won the MMKF in 2020, tells about the elderly married couple of St. Petersburg intellectuals, played by Svetlana Kryuchkova and Alexander Adabashyan. The best jury, headed by the Spanish director and producer Luis Minyarro, will choose the best among them.
The actress, the singer, TV presenter and producer Boshra from Egypt, French screenwriter, director and producer of Romanian origin, Cornel Georgitsa, American actor John Robinson and our compatriots-director Alexei German Jr. and actress Maryan Spivak will help him in this difficult matter.
In the competition “Russian Premieres”, which is held as part of the MMKF since 2022 (and so far seems to be a hand on the heart, more alive and relevant, at least for the domestic film process), there were seven paintings: “Wolves” by Mikhail Kulunakov, “Legends of our ancestors” Ivan Sosnin, “Hello Hello” Anton Maslov, “Postarian” Andrei Razenkova, “There” Ivan Petukhov and two directorial debuts – “Endless April” by Anton Butakova and “impostors” by Maria Reisen. They will evaluate the jury as directors of different generations – Vladimir Grammatikov and Anna Matison, as well as producer Sergei Titinkov.
In addition, the MMKF will host competitions of short and documentary cinema. The first of them presented 13 films, in the second – 8, including 2 Russian ones: “Reverse” by Ivan Tverdovsky about foreign journalists in the Donbass and “Zimnik” Yuri Dorokhin about the drivers of heavy trucks, which deliver equipment to a remote oil field. The jury of these programs will be headed by the Turkish actor Ercan Kolchak Kötendil and the American writer and public figure Peter Kuznik, who worked with Oliver Stone.
The serial program « First Episode », which debuted at the MMKF in 2019, was decided this time to pause.
However, the audience will not remain without the premiere of a multi -part project: the festival will host the special order “Traveling to the Sun and Back” by Roman Mikhailov, the most prolific Russian director of the last three years, which has already gained a cult status.
Now he decided after his colleagues to speak out on the topic of the 90s. All seven episodes of the series will be shown in one session a length of five and a half hours.
