MIVD sees increasing threat from Russia: ‘Gray area between war and peace’
In 2024, the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) saw a Russian cyber attack on the digital operating system of ‘a public provision’ in the Netherlands. The service reports this annual report. The MIVD does not announce which facility it is. According to the service, the attack has not caused any damage by a Russian hackers group.
According to the MIVD, the Netherlands is in a ‘gray area’ between peace and war due to the hybrid attacks from Russia. In the annual report of the MIVD, a lot of attention is paid to that threat: « The services (MIVD and AIVD) see the Russian threat against Europe, even after a possible outcome of the war with Ukraine, but not decrease but increase, » says MIVD director Peter Reesink.
Defense minister Ruben Brekelmans (VVD) also confirms that the annual report shows « that we live in a gray zone between war and peace. » Brekelmans: « We now have to defend ourselves against cyber attacks, espionage and attempts to sabotage every day in the Netherlands. At the same time we have to strengthen our military capacity at a rapid pace. » The annual report was sent to the Lower House on Tuesday and the MIVD gives a press conference on the annual report.
