Missions do not make big gaps in the local budgets / day

Municipal expenditure for foreign missions is significantly lower than similar expenditure in public administrations.

In 2024, the expenditure on foreign missions in any of the Latvian municipalities did not reach 0.6% of the total expenditure. Overall, the expenses related to foreign missions did not create a significant load on municipal budgets. This is evidenced by the reports of public authorities and municipalities compiled by the Treasury.

The biggest expenses in Valmiera County

Of all Latvian municipalities in 2024, the largest expenses for foreign missions were in Valmiera County, where they amounted to 5.5 thousandths (0.55%) of the total expenditure of the relevant year. Next came Gulbene county with 5.2 thousandths and Jelgava county with 5.1 thousandths.

By comparison, in 2023, the Ministry of Justice’s expenditure on foreign missions was 6.45 thousandth of the total expenditure of this ministry. Saeima expenditure for foreign missions in 2023 was significantly higher – 17 thousandth of the total expenditure of our national parliament. The State Chancellery’s expenses for foreign missions in 2023 exceeded 3.1% of all expenses of the State Chancellery. It should be recalled here that former Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš used a rented private aircraft when traveling abroad.
