The academic year is coming to an end, and a month later, schoolchildren will go on the long-awaited holidays, because this year for many turned out to be difficult due to the transition to the Estonian language. But the next academic year and new challenges ahead. The main one is the lack of teachers in Narva schools that meet language requirements. How do the city authorities plan to solve this issue so that children can continue their studies from September 1?

Who is missing in Narva schools

According to the head of the Culture Department of the Narva City Council of Larisa Degel, now the Narva schools require seven and a half dozen teachers. From the vacancies posted on the website, you can see that these are both primary school teachers and subjects – mathematicians, physics, teachers of history and social science, physical education, art, music, technology and natural sciences. Teachers of Estonian and Russian languages, psychologists and special teachers are also needed. That is, vacancies are open in almost all school subjects and at all levels of training. The main requirement is the knowledge of the Estonian language at the level of C1, in some cases – B2.
“Now about 50 teachers with a category of B1 are working in municipal schools of Narva. At the end of May, many of them will take the exam at level B2. We really hope that they will show good results, since from September 1 we will not be able to continue labor relations with teachers whose knowledge of Estonian language is below the level of B2, ”Larisa Degel told the journalist of the Narva newspaper.
She emphasized that when forecasting personnel needs, they focused on the number of teachers registered for passing the exam, taking into account that some may not pass it. The search for 75 teachers is not an easy task, but, according to Degel, last year they were required twice as much, so there is still a chance that the states are equipped, all the more this year the search is carried out when advising the staff of personnel.

The pedagogical potential of Narvityans

Before attracting specialists from other cities, as it was last year, teachers will begin to look for in Narva. For this, on May 15, the Kesklinna school will host an event to which everyone who has an interest in the profession of a teacher and a master’s degree in pedagogy. In full or partial compliance with qualifications and the requirements for the knowledge of the Estonian language, you can count on a salary of almost 2800 euros with full load and partial compensation for housing costs.

“According to the statistics of the Research Center for Riigikoga, more than a hundred people who have training of a teacher, but not working at school live in Narva. These figures gave a study of the activities of specialists who received pedagogical education. Therefore, first of all, we would like to attract these people, to use the potential of those who live in our city, it is easier than looking for specialists in other cities. In addition, we know: in Narva the best person is a Narvityan. Young people who study in the magistracy of the Narva College also play an important role. Perhaps they would like to work at school, but they need to push them to this or give additional information. We must do our best, and if we find at least five specialists, it will already be good, ”said the mayor of Narva Katri Raik.

She also noted that she would be present at the meeting on May 15, and the director of six municipal schools of the city will talk with potential candidates and give information about vacancies in their institutions. Everyone who is interested in the professions of the teacher will be able to ask questions, but should not make a decision directly at the event, there will be time to think and weigh all the pros and cons. Perhaps one of the teachers who have already made a “career revolution” will come and will share their experience.

“We have many vacancies for potential candidates. I don’t know what kind of education these people will come with, but we need both primary school teachers, special teachers, music teachers and technology. We hope that on May 15 someone will come with such a specialty. I would like to see certified specialists, because a teacher is a person who already has a master’s degree in pedagogy and can work as a teacher. I would like to see candidates with education, albeit without teaching experience at school, ”the director of the Kesklinna school Anna Zubova told NG journalist.

According to Katri Raik, teachers who work this year in the first and fourth grades, without a doubt, coped with the difficult task of the transition. But next year, the second and fifth grades will begin to study in Estonian, which will be more difficult. In addition, it is already necessary to help third -graders now, give them more objects on Estonian so that they are ready for the fourth class. This will make life easier for them, because in the fifth grade literature and history will be added – objects that require a fairly large vocabulary.

Mathematics in online format

To the question of whether in the event of an acute lack of teachers in Narva schools, online lessons with one teacher at once for several classes, as they tried to do in Tallinn, Larisa Degel replied that the eighth grade of the Kesklinna school joined the pilot project of the Tallinn Department of Education. The guys, together with the students of Tallinn schools, study mathematics online. This experience will be analyzed at the end of the school year.

“The eighth grade of language immersion in our school really began to study mathematics remotely. Not only our guys, but also other Estonia schoolchildren participate in this project. Teaching is in Estonian. The theme of the course « Solution of linear equations with two unknown. » Training materials are sent to us, we print them and distribute them to children. The textbook corresponds to the textbook of the main school, according to which mathematics is taught, but classes are held in Estonian. In the lessons, there is also a mathematics teacher of this class, which previously taught them in Russian, and at the end of the lesson it can explain incomprehensible moments, ”Anna Zubova explained NG.

So far, the guys had only three double lesson, and they will last until June 9th. In early May, there will be a test work that will allow you to understand how students cope with the material. According to the school principal, they decided not to take part in the pilot project because of the lack of subject teachers, but to try the possibility of conducting mathematics lessons in Estonian and testing a new approach to learning.

From the second week of May, a large -scale campaign to search for staff for Narva schools will begin, which will take place on various sites, including on social networks, so that all interested candidates are found about work. How successful the set of teachers will be, it will be clear by the first of September, when schoolchildren return to their desks.
