Minister Fechet announces « the novelty » from Praid

The Minister of the Environment, Waters and Forests, Mircea Fechet was on Saturday in Praid, in a working visit, he expressed his concern about the increase of chloride concentrations from both Corund and Târnava Mică, as well as from Târnava Mare and Mureș, and the authorities in Hungary were notified.

At the same time, the minister stated that unfortunately the first signs of fish mortality appeared, being seen ‘whole banks of fish gathered at the edge of the watercourse, in a situation that obviously endangered the biodiversity there’.

Referring to the interventions that are made in Praid, Mircea Fechet announced the « novelty of the day », respectively the installation of high capacity pumps, to cross, with the help of hoses, the critical area.

« The novelty of today (Saturday – no) It is represented by a decision related to the installation of high capacity pumps to cross, with the help of hoses, the perimeter declared as a critical. This means that a number of three pumps, with a capacity of 600 m3 per hour, ie almost 150 liters per second, will be put into operation and practically what is happening today, when we have major infiltrations and when we have significant water evacuations loaded with chloride during Corund water, a situation that generates a real disaster, which will start in the ecological disaster. from today. So, if I was well informed by colleagues, the first and second pump are already put into operation, (…) following today the third pump will be put into operation. In addition (…), a new such high capacity pump is to be installed, this time by the colleagues from the Romanian waters. And, through new pumping capacity, we will be able to manage a tributary of the Corund Water Course, practically reduce the flow of water course by another 200 liters per second, which will mitigate the impact on ecosystems, ”said the minister.

Fechet said the decision -making process will be done under signature, not just verbally as it has happened so far

The minister participated in a presentation made by experts at Babeș-Bolyai University and showed that the evolution of the last period indicates possible risks of collapse.

« I found, from high resolution images, the fact that in the last 24 hours the surface of the suffos has increased a lot. Basically, there is a dynamic evolution that lately, at least, tends to accelerate and that could mean that there is, in the future, the risk of collapses. Dislocated from the ceiling, which could endanger the households in the vicinity of the mine.

He also showed that the first results generated by the installed microseismicity sensors were presented, which will generate data related to an immediate danger.
