Milan Design Week shows all sides of human life – Diepresse.com

Living, dying, sitting in prison: parallel to the most important furniture fair in the world, all of Milan relies on the topic of design with a variety of ramifications.

The Berlin design journalist, who gathered at the same time at the group exhibition of Viennese designers, is initially surprised and prefers to wait in front of the presentation room – a shop for sex toys in the Porta Venezia district. « Did they make all sex toys? », She wants to know before exploring the « Vienna Vibes » announced here. Nothing, but as is so often the case with creative festivals – is also so that the exhibitors also try to score with the most original locations.

In recent years, the nomenclature and character of the design performance show have gradually changed: Was simply talking about the events at the events that settled outside of the trade fair area and the Salone del Mobile – Fuorisalone – Fuori Outside – is now talking about a design week due to the large number of events and alternative locations. Several quarters emerge, Brera, for example, Isola and – new neuralgic point – the streets around Porta Venezia.

Here the Galerie Zippefeig also opened its sex shop tents for the Viennese group show, a few streets further away, Arthur Arbesser for Wittmann has tried an airy location in a typical Milan back yard. The Capsule-Plaza trade fair with selected positions (such as a bright green installation by Pharrell Williams’ cosmetics brand Humanrace together with the Swiss module furniture professional USM) in the Spazio Maiocchi is also a new crowd puller that is located at the corner. Until the BASSO bar, more than usual a neuralgic point of the Milan nightlife during the design week, it is conveniently only a few steps.

Life and death

Austrian presence is not only noticeable here (the foreign trade will hold its group show with design positions in Biennale mode in the future), but also in the showroom of Servomuto-Arbesser designed the lamp « Huf »-and in the renowned Gallery Rossana Orlandi for Design Collectibles, where it-something unusual for them-lighting objects from Onka Allmayer-Beck gives.

And then there would be an exhibition of urns (fitting: « The Last Pot ») of such big names as Philippe Starck and the Vienna Design studio Eoos for Alessi: The three were also that Alberto Alessi only gave the idea during a table talk that these vessels (for example to set up in the library at home, where this is possible) could be designed as design objects. Especially from the Viennese perspective, which is known not to be entirely morbidity, one has to say: an obvious idea!

A close relationship has long since combined the processes of the design week with the largest luxury brands from fashion, which in recent years have more and more emphasized on their own furniture and interior accessory offers. Gucci, for example, invited seven design studios-including the Palestinian artist Dima Srouji-to deal with the central material in the famous « Bamboo » pocket collection. Louis Vuitton showed new « Objects Nomades » in a historic Palazzo, including a surreal -looking table football table of the Studio Campana, and Hermès focused on new glass objects in a clear, bright installation. Elsewhere, Giorgio Armani celebrated the 25th anniversary of his “Casa” line, while Prada and Miu Miu also made a name for themselves, without introducing their own products. Prada invited too top -class design talks, the beautiful -minded sister brand to a book club.

Big cinema

Loro Piana relied on a stage -ready staging, the trendy dimorest studio had modeled the possible scenography of a film (Romy Schneider looks into the auditorium from the wall), and as big as possible cinema is the order of the day. The Baxter brand also relied on the topic. For Roche Bobois, Pedro Almodóvar had designed a very colorful collection by posters to his films. Cassina again invited to the Teatro Lirico Giorgio Gaber to a stage play in collaboration with FormaFanta, the costumes of the actors come from Jil Sander.

The original staging of products is mostly concerned when a model like « Frog » by Piero Lissoni for Living Divani celebrates its 30th anniversary, then part of the showroom is already disguised with frog green fluffpaper. Other large manufacturers such as Flexform and EDRA staged their outdoor collections in historical settings. EDRA, for example, in the Palazzo Durini, its own splendor showroom on the design mile of Via Durini, Flexform in the courtyard of the Chiostro di Sant’angelo with a view of a building planned for the appearance of Milan. Some Ur-Mailands or « Milanesi Doc » used the time window after the Sunday church for a tour of the court that is otherwise not accessible.

Another highlight was the « L’Appartamento » project, for which design online retailer Artemest intercoated interior designers had commissioned interior designs. The German luminaire specialist Occhio presented colorful innovations in a pavilion next to the beautiful Villa Necchi, itself often a film location. And under the rail strand running by Milano Central, the creative hub Dropcity with its own exhibition space has set up in several parallel tunnels. During the design week, the show « Prison Times » was shown, which deals with the daily routine of detained people and the prison system. A surprising topic, but especially afterwards, the tireless design gaps in Milan are looking for during these packed days.
