Often, micro -aggression lies behind seemingly harmless phrases, such as « you look tired », « You are smiling », « You’re too emotional », « You can make a concession, you are a woman ». But behind these phrases, there is a clear message – the woman is judged in appearance, not professional skills, or her opinion is questioned because she is considered too sensitive.
In addition to these statements, situations in which women are interrupted, they are not responsible, they are not involved in decisions, or automatically entrust formal, less important roles. There are also cases where a woman is not given the opportunity to present an important issue, even if she is a responsible person, and instead a man is given an initiative on the grounds that « it is complicated ». The use of words such as the « girl » in a professional context also gives the feeling that the woman is infantilized without perceiving her role and competence seriously.
It is important to be aware that micro -aggression is often unconscious. A person who says or behaves like this does not even want to offend, but the intention and impact is not the same. You need to talk about it to combat micro -aggression. First of all, it is important to name such situations in the name – in a peaceful but convincing tone that the note has not been in place or that it creates a sense of discomfort.
You can also just ask, « What did you want to say with it? » This issue often makes the other person think.
Another way is to clearly formulate its boundaries and desires, stating that the evaluation should be supported by professional achievements, not sex or appearance.
Restriction of microagresia is not only an individual struggle, it is a cultural change that needs to be encouraged at the organization level. Managers play an important role here. At the workplace, the employer must build an environment where micro -thoroughs are not tolerated or justified. It is important to create an environment where every person can express their opinion without fear of being interrupted or ignored where the assignment distribution is not dependent on gender, but on competence and where there is no acceptable remark for the look of the look
