Mickoski: We are ready, Europe can count on us, and now is the time for us to start counting Europe
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski today at a joint press conference with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Calas, emphasized that our commitment is clear, the country belongs to the EU, which has so far invested great efforts and has made many victims, but noted that it should be.
-We talked about the road to the European Union -a path that was neither easy, nor short, nor always righteous. Road with many challenges, compromises and, unfortunately, long waiting. Our determination remains clear – we belong to the European Union. Not because someone owes us to us, but because we have been building a society of democratic values, the rule of law, human rights and good neighborliness for decades. Because we invest, we sacrifice and change, hoping that labor will be recognized. However, that determination must be returned. This state has the right to expect much clearer, more open and honorable confirmation than the Union itself. Because, we will agree, not all member states and not always, treated the European spirit towards Macedonia. There were periods of blockades, there were unprincipled demands, and there was silence from Brussels, when we needed any voice of support-Mickoski said at a joint news conference.
Emphasizing that the presence of Calas today in Skopje is an important message that the EU does not forget this region and that there is a legitimate interest in our situation and our efforts, Mickoski noted that they have openly discussed, as it suits partners aspiring to a common future and that the EU’s senior official has asked for a fair treatment.
-Today I asked for fair treatment. I asked for consistency. I asked Europe to show leadership, not only on paper, but also in reality. Restore confidence in the European idea, especially for young people. To show that the European Union is not a closed club, but a living vision, a community of values, open to those who live those values. Today we are not only talking about reforms, we live them. And we don’t do that to get applause, but because we believe it’s the right way. We believe in the European dream, but we also seek to be a dream available to everyone, not just for the chosen. That is why I welcome today’s inauguration of the first security and defense dialogue with the Union. It’s not just the usual symbolism. It is a signal that we are moving in the same direction- the prime minister said.
He emphasized that cooperation with the Balkan Medical Working Group and the support we receive in the field of defense, health and youth policies are also steps that mean a lot to us.
-Even with all the challenges, I believe that the future is on our side. I believe in our citizens, in their determination, patience and maturity. I also believe in the vision of the European Union, as a community that values the principles, does not forget the contribution and knows when it is time to take the right step. Our hand remains a fewer. We are open to friendship, dialogue and cooperation. But we stand firm, upright and dignified, with a clear message: we are ready. Europe can count on us, and now it’s time for us to start counting on Europe. Let this meeting be another bridge, a bridge of confidence, understanding and a common future- said Mickoski.
