The People’s Meeting at Bornholm on Thursday formed the framework for a rare personal conversation with the prime minister of Denmark.

On stage for a live recording of Radio IIII podcast “A Chapter for itself” Shared Mette Frederiksen for the first time openly and detailed how the assault on her in Copenhagen last summer left traces – both physically and mentally.

During the interview, the prime minister said that the incident in June 2024 hit her harder than she immediately expected. She described the feeling that the experience triggered something that had built up over time.

« When I look back like that, it was the famous drop where the cup was filled. And I got upset, simply. It wasn’t a choice to make it seriously, because there was no choice, » said Frederiksen from the stage at Allinge Harbor.

After the assault, which took place at Kultorvet in Copenhagen, Mette Frederiksen sought calm and received help. The man behind the attack was sentenced to four months of unconditional imprisonment in August of that year and expelled with six years of entry ban.

The prime minister told the podcast that she received emergency relief and chose to listen to both professionals and her loved ones.

« Yes, I did. And I accepted the advice of many, and I listened more than I usually do. And I was more in the conversation about it, and then had to say after a while that ‘now we have to move on too’, » she explained.

The assault is not the only thing that has made its mark on Frederiksen. In the conversation, she also reflected on the pressure that has followed the prime minister’s post through a series of crises – from the corona pandemic to the mink scandal and the massive protests that followed.

She also mentioned how her husband, film director Bo Tengberg, has played an important role as support and present interlocutor during the most turbulent periods.

The podcast’s live edition was part of the official program of the People’s Assembly and focused on showing politicians from a more personal angle.
