Metal and electrical industry loses 20,000 jobs

The Bavarian metal and electrical industry has reduced 20,000 jobs within one year. In the first quarter of this year alone, there were almost 10,000 jobs, as the two industry associations Bayme and VBM announced. This was the strongest decline in workforce since the 2009 financial crisis and the fifth quarter of falling employment in a row. On average of the first three months, the companies in the most important Bavarian industrial industry still employed 855,470 people.

Started down, but still not encouraging for companies

The cause is the still poor order situation, even if the downward trend now seems to be stopped. According to the economic report, the production of the metal and electrical companies was a good two percent higher in the first quarter than in the final quarter of 2024, but still a good three percent lower than a year earlier. However, the order intake has improved, which compared in comparison both at the end of 2024 and the first quarter of 2024.

Uncertainty remains

« Above all, the high energy and interest costs, the high bureaucracy load, the growing competition from China and the political uncertainties at home and abroad led to the Bavarian M+E Industry a lot, » said Bertram Brossardt, the managing director of the two associations. « The result is sub -cast companies and a reduction in employment. » According to Brossardt’s assessment, the low point is overcome, but the “structural stress factors” remained. In the first place, Brossardt named the unresolved trade conflict with the United States.
