Merz: The Peace Ball in Ukraine is in Russia and only there
The Russian government must show that it really wants peace in Ukraine. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz on Friday in Brussels, where he met with the leaders of the major European institutions.
According to him, Russia should now quickly accept the proposal and see « whether it is possible for it to be the beginning for real peaceful negotiations. »
« The ball is now in Russia and only there. The Russian government has to show that they are serious for peace in Ukraine, » Merz said. |
The new chancellor said the EU and the United States are ready to increase pressure on Moscow and with new sanctions to get Russia to activate.

Rearmament money
During his first visit to Brussels, after his appointment, Friedrich Merz added that the EU and the United States would continue to support Ukraine, increasing its help, if necessary, although Germany continues to oppose a common EU debt to finance defense costs.
Mertz explained that the discussions about this in the German government are to come, but he maintains the vision of his predecessor Olaf Scholz, whose party is in the ruling coalition, that common debt should be an exception to cases such as the Covid-19 pandemic. The EU has to think about how to serve it, not enter the « endless debt of a spiral, » he warned.
Germany itself has reduced the restrictions on the debt, which did not have to exceed 1% of GDP in order to increase its re -equipment costs and asked the EU to exclude these expenses from its budget balance in order to avoid criminal procedures for superfit.
