Merz has good memories of his military service

During this time he was trained as an armored artilleryist, serving the field shaft 190, later the tank shaft M 109. His last rank was flag junker.

The compulsory military service was suspended in 2011, which in the practice of abolishing military and community service was equal. The Union and SPD now want to introduce a new and initially based military service model. This is a compromise and meets the SPD’s demands. The Union had asked to end the suspension of compulsory military service. In politics, however, a possible reintroduction is still being discussed.
