Merz has good memories of his military service
Chancellor Friedrich Merz looks back positively for his military service in the 1970s. « I have good memories of my time with the Bundeswehr, » said the CDU politician of « Bild am Sonntag ». «The camaraderie was great, the community welded us together. We felt good to make our contribution in a large gear. And that gave us security, »said Merz.
According to a government spokesman, Merz performed his military service from July 1, 1975 to September 30, 1976 at the Bundeswehr locations Clausthal-Zellerfeld (Lower Saxony), Warendorf (NRW), Kusel (Rhineland-Palatinate) and Dülmen (NRW). During this time he was trained as an armored artilleryist, serving the field shaft 190, later the tank shaft M 109. His last rank was flag junker.
The compulsory military service was suspended in 2011, which in the practice of abolishing military and community service was equal. The Union and SPD now want to introduce a new and initially based military service model. This is a compromise and meets the SPD’s demands. The Union had asked to end the suspension of compulsory military service. In politics, however, a possible reintroduction is still being discussed.
