Mercury is a strong neurotoxin.
In April 1956 they admitted to the hospital in Japan Minamata’s five -year -old girl. She had symptoms that doctors couldn’t give advice.
The girl had problems with walking and talking and was bothered by frequent cramps. A few days later, her sister came to the hospital with the same symptoms. And doctors gradually learned that other children in the neighborhood have similar symptoms.
It was not a contagious disease, all sick children were connected that they lived near the chemical factory Chisso and ate fish from the Gulf of Minamata.
Almost seven months after the discovery of the first case, the research team assessed that unusual symptoms causes poisoning by heavy metal – mercury. She got into the fish’s bodies from the wastewater from the factory.
