MEPs want an immediate suspension of all Hungary EU funds


MEPs from all pro -European parliamentary groups sent a letter to the European Commissioner for the budget on Wednesday, demanding the immediate suspension of payments for all EU funds for Hungary in order to force Prime Minister Viktor Orban to comply with European law and values.

The deputies, including the only Bulgarian, is Radan Kanev (EPP/DSB), express fears that the money from the European budget can be spent incorrectly and sinks due to the widespread corruption and violations of fundamental rights.

« That’s enough! It’s unacceptable that we are still sending European funds to a corrupt regime. It’s time to stop all funds, » Green MEP wrote in X.

The signaturers include the rapporteur of the European Parliament for Hungary Tineke Stick, the chairman of the parliamentary committee on budget control Niklas Herbst and the co -chair of the parliamentary intergroup for the fight against corruption Daniel Frend, Chloe Ridel and Michal Vavikevic.

In their letter to European Commissioner Peter Serafin, MEPs wrote that the Hungarian body, who must monitor that European funds are being spent in accordance with the rules, has intentionally weakened, with its chairman being investigated by the authorities. They indicate that the Union of Judges is being pressured by the government, and parliament has adopted a law which limits the rights to collect and those of people with different sexual orientationand that a body was created that investigates non -governmental organizations receiving funding from abroad.
« At a time when Europe is facing deep external challenges, we must be united in the protection of democracy and fundamental rights, resisting any deviation to authoritarianism within the Union, » MEPs wrote.
