Men who want to become (none) fathers – Diepresse.com
The topic of fertility is still associated with women. The causes of unwanted childlessness are 55.4 percent in men, 14.9 percent in women and in 29.7 percent of cases on both sexes.
« You can be great with children, you would be a good father. » He no longer knows how often Franz H. heard this sentence. However, it is certain for the 40-year-old: « I know that a child would be a number too big for me. » An insight that had to grow: « There were many conversations with my partner and with a therapist, » he says. In the end, however, the two agreed: « We love our jobs and traveling too much to restrict ourselves. » In addition, children are associated with high costs and loss of income.
Franz gives exactly those reasons that rank in the first three places in a recent survey by Parship when it comes to why women and men in Austria decide against young people. « It’s nice that we are not alone, » says the cook. But: « There is no standard recipe; everyone has to decide themselves. »
A finding that Benedikt Schwan cannot share. He is one of those men who are not more likely to be more likely to become a father, but was presented by nature with accomplished facts: Schwan was 41 and in the tenth year, when he learned, to include seven percent of all men of reproductive age who cannot testify.
Men are meant
A shock that moved him to process his feelings, questions and fears in book form: « The doctor explains to me something about the sparrow development in the testicles, the responsible hormones, » writes Schwan in « Ohnekind ». « According to our results from the blood tests, your body tries to produce sperm, which is also hormonal. But that does not work. No sperm cells can be demonstrated in the ejaculate, » he was told. It is very likely that the sterility of the German was genetically determined at the time.
After a while of the withdrawal, Schwan began to research. On the one hand, he came across various studies, such as a meta -thesis of 2022, according to which sterility in men has increased by 50 percent in the past five decades. Environmental influences and lifestyle are cited as the reasons for this. On the other hand, he was confronted with the question: Why doesn’t man talk about it?
Although the topic of fertility affects both gender, it is only associated with women by 28 percent of men, says reproductive doctor Andreas Obruca. « It has not yet arrived everywhere that fertility deteriorates due to age. » Studies show that the sperm cells of 45-year-olds are less agile compared to men who are younger than 35. In addition: « The causes of unwanted childlessness are 55.4 percent in men, 14.9 percent in women and in 29.7 percent of cases on both. »
Excessively overrated
Contrary to the numbers, « men overestimate their fertility, » says Obruca. As a result, only 8.3 percent of all men think about having their sperm cells examined.
« You should make a spermiogram as early as possible » to know about the three essential parameters: the number of seed threads per milliliter (optimally more than 20 million), the mobility (25 percent should be quick) and the look (to penetrate more easily into the egg cell). « Men shouldn’t fear this analysis, » emphasizes the specialist, « she also helps with lifestyle planning ».
Book
Not
More and more men cannot witness children, but hardly anyone talks about it. The journalist Benedikt Schwan scores out of her ranks.
