Memory words about Alfred Nilsen – altaposten.no

With deep respect and gratitude, we remember Alfred Nilsen, a tireless advocate for the Alta River and an engaged social person.

His efforts have left lasting traces, both locally and nationally. The struggle he fought for nature and the environment will forever be part of our common history.

As head of the People’s Action against the development of the Alta-Kautokeinovassdrag in the 1970s and 1980s, Alfred became a central figure in the Norwegian environmental match. With courage, integrity and an unwavering belief in dialogue and non-violent resistance, he led one of the country’s most significant civil disobedience actions. His commitment inspired thousands and gave the environmental case a voice that is still heard today.

Was Alfred maybe the gardener who sowed the seed in all of us?

He may not see himself in that role, but in retrospect we can ask if that was not exactly what he was. At the Folk Action’s final national conference in 1982, he said: « You are the ones who are going to be the seed that will germinate, and who will make it so many lion teeth that the authorities eventually do not know their army advice and must accept us as an ornamental plant instead of weeds. »The seed he was talking about has grown into a strong movement, and today it is our responsibility to continue to plant the seeds further. In this way, we can stand strong together in the future – in the fight against the threats to wild salmon, watercourse development and the environment.

For us in Alta Salmon Fishing Party, Alfred’s work has been of great importance. His efforts for the Alta River and its future were invaluable, and we will always honor his memory by continuing the battle for the river and its value for future generations.

Our thoughts go to his family and closest.

Rest in peace, Alfred. Your efforts will never be forgotten. As the salmon returning to its river, and as the river that tirelessly flows towards the sea, your memory will live on through generations.

On behalf of Alta Salmon Fishing Party,

Vegard Ludvigsen
