Members GroenLinks and PvdA call on the parties to take action: 'We must complete cooperation, now'
GroenLinks and the PvdA must merge as quickly as possible into a new left -wing party. The influential action group Roodgroen on Friday argues for this in a manifestothat has since been signed by around a thousand proponents. « We call on the parties to clarify the voter as quickly as possible, » they write. « We must complete the cooperation of our two parties. Not only in a few years, not only in a few months, but now. ”
Roodgroen consists of members of both GroenLinks and the PvdA, who are for a further merger of both parties. Various party prominents such as Job Cohen, Diederik Samsom and Bram van Oijk have attached their name to the initiative. The action group wants GroenLinks and PvdA to sail with the intertwining of both parties because the world « is on fire » and « inequality between the richest and the rest explodes. » Roodgroen argues for a « joint, tightened ideology and program ».
In the fall of 2026, the members of GroenLinks and PvdA determine whether they are for a possible party, or other form of further cooperation. The (geo) political developments at home and abroad ensure that the sympathizers of red-green do not want to wait for that. « If the cabinet falls, we must be ready and offer an alternative, » writes the action group.
New party
There has been discussion for some time about whether and how the PvdA and GroenLinks will further shape their cooperation. Last month, PvdA leader Frans Timmermans spoke to the creation of a new progressive movement. Timmermans also stated that he was impatient and brought behind the plea of the young Member of Parliament Habtamu de Hoop (PvdA). He wants to stop a merger process of existing party structures and instead want to start all over again, with Timmermans as a foreman.
De Hoop and Timmermans do not differ much from what Roodgroen is committed to, explains spokesman Frank van der Wolde. « We want both parties to go together, with new impetus that builds on both parties at the same time. Great if others connect – but we expect that the core will consist of GroenLinks and PvdA. «
