Meloni claims: Donald Trump will visit Rome and consider meeting with EU representatives
US President Donald Trump has agreed to an official visit to Rome and will consider meeting the European Union representatives while there will be there, said Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday at an oval office.
« I want to thank President Trump for accepting the invitation to officially visit Rome in the near future and consider the opportunity to meet the EU representatives on that occasion, » Meloni said, speaking next to the US leader.
The journey of the Italian Prime Minister to the United States came in the midst of the customs dispute between Washington and Brussels, with she and Trump expressed the belief that the United States and Europe would be able to interfere with the trade agreement before Trump’s 90-day break in terms of some customs.
Trump said that « one hundred percent » is sure of a possible trade agreement with Europe. « Of course there will be a trade agreement (…) They want to conclude it very much. We will conclude a trade agreement too.
Meloni, a 48-year-old conservative, was the only European Union leader invited to Trump’s inauguration in January, and Trump expressed her tendency to say that « a very special person » and « friend », as well as an ally in the fight against « woke » ideology.
Earlier this month, Meloni called the US customs « wrong », but during the meeting with Trump she said she was in the White House to make the West « stronger ».
According to Reuters, their meeting was held the day before Meloni would host Vice President JD Vance in Rome. These consecutive conversations could be a key indicator of whether melons can play the role of intermediaries between the US and Europe.
Among other things, Meloni said Italy would have to increase her imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US, as well as that Italian companies would invest billions of dollars in the US in the coming years.
