Meeting about the AZC arrival in Noord-Brabant terminated early after violence and fireworks
A meeting about a new asylum seekers’ center of up to 192 asylum seekers in the municipality of Best’s municipality of Best was terminated early on Wednesday evening, after protests broke out there. Omroep Brabant has that reported. Around one hundred and fifty people were present at the meeting in a sports hall, they had registered in advance. Outside, an extra group of campaigners tried to enter the hall through different entrances, partly with the help of the inside. Eventually they broke the front door of the sports hall open twice.
The demonstrators threw fireworks with eggs and struck fireworks, which already caused a troubled situation outside. When the activists were broken through the door, they also stopped fireworks in the hall of the building. According to Omroep Brabant, one of the activists put a firework bomb off after the meeting and was then arrested.
Those present were split into four groups by the municipality, which caused dissatisfaction. Residents of the municipality regularly interrupted the Burgemeester Rianne Donders. Eventually the meeting was suspended with the aim of explaining the participants.
Mayor Donders, however, came back with another message: she could no longer guarantee safety due to the unrest outside the room. Then she broke the meeting. According to Omroep Brabant, that announcement was received with ‘cynical laughter’ by those present who were accompanied by police officers and boas to leave the building.
