He recalled that the Croatian police faced the rebel Serb forces who had unconstitutionally and violently occupied by the Plitvice Lakes National Park, set up barricades and blockages, adding that it was a terrorist act of demolishing the Constitutional and Legal Order of the Republic of Croatia to which Croatia had to respond.

That Easter morning 1991, members of the paramilitary formations of the so -called SAO Krajina started firing on Croatian police officers and specials.

The Croatian police officer, 22-year-old Josip Jovic, laid down his life that day and entered the collective consciousness as the first Croatian defender killed in the Homeland War, with nine more police officers and specials wounded.

« The beginning of the Homeland War and the defense of the sovereignty of the Republic of Croatia is inevitably binding to the Croatian police from which our winning units of the Croatian Army and the Croatian Police emerged, because then we realized the importance of this historic moment and were willing to lay down our lives for the freedom of our homeland, » Medved said.
