Jean Spinette (PS), the mayor of the Brussels municipality of Sint-Gillis, is displeased because of a Pro-Palestinian performance that was performed in his municipality during the Resistance Festival last weekend. On images that circulated on social media afterwards, the cry « From the River to the Sea » can be heard, a controversial slogan that, according to opponents, evokes the destruction of the state of Israel.

« I share the indignation about those images, » says Spinette Monday. He does emphasize that prior to the event an advice was requested from the police, as happens for every public manifestation, and that there was no reason to ban the performance.
According to the mayor, the organizers were given various conditions. For example, they were not allowed to refer to the Palestinian extremist group of Hamas, nor to the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, there could be no call for hatred or violence and the « social cohesion had to be respected ». « When I see those images, I note that no follow -up has been given, » says Spinette.
The mayor now looks at the police what measures may be discussed. The file may be transferred to the public prosecutor.
The Resistance Festival took place between 6 and 8 June on Bethlehemplein and in the Pianofabriek cultural center. This year the event was dominated by the Palestinian resistance.
