May 17: Full of pride, not alcohol

We can be proud of how we celebrate our national day. Children’s train, folk party and three times three cheers! We celebrate our democracy. And in a troubled time, where we can read about war, increased level of conflict and democracies under pressure, it is more important than in a long time. Our folk celebration is a particularly important symbol.

In Norway, we have a tradition of putting the children at the center on National Day. For the kids it’s a magical day. It is the fine station on, smiling crowds, happy tones from the corps, unity and ice cream. That magic is worth protecting! For that just what gives us the inclusive folk party we want.

In light of this, it is a paradox that May 17 – Children’s Day – has become one of the days of the year where it is most accepted and natural to drink from breakfast to evening (and for some longer). The champagne breakfast is now an incorporated tradition of many. And the May 16 party has been replaced with the dayfill on National Day itself.

When May 17 this year lands on a Saturday, National Day can become even more alcohol marinated for many. It can create uncertainty and insecurity for children, but also the rest of the population should have the freedom to celebrate a national day without alcohol and fill as part of the frame.

According to a population survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of us in AV-and-to, we see that;

It should make the alarm bells call.

More hair Also reacted. This year, the charge for May 17 has been characterized by a pavement debate in several places in the country. On-and-on-to-date the debate welcomes. We still wish that the starting point was somewhat different. That we rather discussed: How can we make National Day less alcohol marinated?

It has great value to preserve May 17 as a folk party with the children in the center. Therefore, we adults should think carefully. For it is we who decide on our need for champagne for breakfast and happiness promille throughout the day to take precedence over the children’s expectations, and potentially create uncertainty, insecurity and give a taste to a magical day.

The call is therefore simple: Let’s pay attention to each other, and let the national day celebration be good for both young and old. It is best done with a national day full of pride, not alcohol.

Happy birthday!
