Markus Ritter and Martin Pfister in the SP-Hearing

Knight is tense, Pfister stacks deeply: Federal Council candidates take the last hurdles

In the Hearings at SP and the Greens, Martin Pfister and Markus Ritter had to answer the last critical questions before the Federal Council election – and convince the factions of their advantages. After that, only one thing is clear: it will be scarce.

The speculation about the Federal Council election is on a climax on Tuesday evening. The last hearings ended shortly after 4:30 p.m., the opinions of the parliamentarians are made. Even on the “Night of Long Messers” before the election, no new candidates are determined. If the national councilors and stands on Wednesday morning, however, will remain their secret. Hence the speculation.

The parliamentary groups also did not help bring some light into the dark: most of them cannot be seen in the cards. It only seems clear that a clear majority of the 70 SVP votes will go to the National Council and Peasant President Markus Ritter. « He shows the necessary will to leadership to tackle the problems in the VBS, » the party writes. He also knows the processes in federal pods and can forge alliances.

The green liberals, on the other hand, do not make an official election recommendation, but speak for Martin Pfister. In her view, the Zug is more suitable for one.

Greens are dissatisfied with both

Pfister can also count on most of the 26 votes for the Greens. Officially, the faction does not want to set their strategy until tomorrow. Both candidates are “not enthusiastic”, emphasized Greens faction leader Aline Trede. With farmers' association president Markus Ritter, the hay in environmental issues is not on the same stage, Martin Pfister as a government council from the canton of Zug, the Mecca for raw material giants, is also anything but a dream candidate of the left.

There is no clear favorite in the other three factions. The SP parliamentary group with 50 parliamentary members has a weighty influence on the elections. And she won't miss it to exercise it. Candidate Markus Ritter also knows: « Many people in the SP think strategically and think about the candidates with which they can best achieve their goals. » He was able to answer many questions « competently and formally correctly ». And above all: « I saw a lot of approval. »

Does that ensure that the necessary voices from the SP? The parliamentary group keeps up to the elections until Wednesday morning and does not recommend a recommendation. Co-parliamentary group leader Samira Marti only says: « We will stick to the ticket and choose one of the two official candidates. »

« Markus Ritter is the favorite »

So who is ahead? The government councilor Martin Pfister said after the Hearings that he was very satisfied. « I gave everything. » But when asked who is chosen, he replies: « Markus Ritter is the favorite. » However, he hoped that as a “outsider” he would still take the race in the end.

That is stacked deeply. As a little -known government council, Martin Pfister continuously approved ground in just one month: at the FDP, he could get half of the 38 votes – or more. In many positions, he is close to the freedom.

And Pfister can also score in his own party. Especially among the bourgeois women, competitor Ritter had already set up when he announced his candidacy when he said that women were less interested in the military. According to the women's roof association Alliance F, both candidates did not shine with feminist knowledge, but Pfister will clearly make more female voices.

While Pfister looked more confident and already, Markus Ritter made a more tense impression the day before the decisive choice. Both know: it's about every single voice.

Who will be the Federal Council tomorrow?
