March 25: When did the 1821 revolution begin?

When did the Greek start Revolution of 1821? According to what we have learned in the previous decades, on March 25, 1821, from Agia Lavra Kalavryta.

According to the commonly accepted, although the friendly company had actually selected the 25or March, as the day of the start of the Greek Revolution, a series of obstacles, betrayals and unexpectedly brought the beginning of the Greek Revolution a few weeks earlier.

The opening is set on February 22, 1821, when the leader of the Friendly Society, Alexandros Ypsilantis and Armed Forces of Greeks from Odessa, Macedonia, the Peloponnese and other areas began the struggle for Freedom in Moldova, but without this.

It is also commonly accepted that at the beginning of the Greek Revolution of 1821, in today’s Greece, we should not treat it as an olive explosion, but as a wick that triggers at the same time and chains of dozens of uprising outbreaks.

The 21stor March in Kalavryta, one of the first rifles falls. On March 22, the old Patras German blesses the chariots of the fighters at Agios Andreas Square in Patras, and on March 23 is released by Kolokotronis and the Maniatis rebels Kalamata.

March 17, however, was a crucial time and Mani was a place.

He writes « FREE STEP » on October 28, 1930:

« Kolokotronis with his own Mourtzino and his own starts, from Scardamoula, the movement for a meeting of the Mani Priests, in Kitrids with Mavromichalis. He knows all the writings of Ypsilantis. It highlights the great risk of losing the race. He wants to bring Petrobei to face the common boil, to philanthropist, to pause him. Some incidents come to help him. «

The most decisive of these « incidents » is the arrival of Gregory Law, Papaflesa.

« By joining his effort with Kolokotronis, he acts the meeting of the yellow. It took many meetings to do Petrobei. Neither Kolokotronis, nor Anagnostaras, nor Nikitaras were in his meetings. They were strangers, they had no position. Justice was only presented as a « temporary representative of the authority commissioner ».

Gregory Right, Papaflesas

So, in the capacity of the envoy of the head of the Friendly Society, Alexandros Ypsilantis, Papaflesas put all his persuasion, which was largely based on the art of deception, in order to persuade Mavromichalis to approve the beginning of the revolution. For the good fortune of the Greeks, Papaflesas knew Mavromichalis’ « button ».

Ambrosius Frantzis recounts: « As he himself, he said to him, under the auspices of herself, many officials and all of them that the representative of the Russian Empire Alexander Ypsilantis wants the restoration of Maurus. »

Petrobeis Mavromichalis was convinced.

« As of seventeen March, according to the decisions they had, they had to prepare and lift the chariots in Mani. (…) Anastasis Mavromichalis and Pikoulakis are presented to Kaimakamis (Tripolitsa). They promise that, if they let them go down to Mani, they will be able to erase any movement with their father. «

Kaimakamis only allows Pikoulakis to leave Tripolitsa, but gives permission to Anastasis Mavromichalis, son of Petrobei « to take all the births and oils, which were in public warehouses, to recruit and to hit any rebel ».

Thus, Anastasis Mavromichalis not only constitutes an army but also has the license of the Ottomans.

Meanwhile in Tsimova, in the village square, the Maniates erect the banner of the revolution and the priest of the Temple of the Taxiarches blesses the weapons of the revolutionaries.

« Swear,

In the name of our Almighty God,

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

and the Holy Trinity,

to pour and the back of my blood,

in favor of faith and homeland.

« Swear,

not to see in the back

If I do not unravel the enemy of the homeland

and my religion.

»I swear, ‘Or when or on the ‘and’ victory or death ‘

in favor of faith and homeland«

Why March 25th

Then why we chose the 25or March as a day of honor of the 1821 revolution? This question, sometimes as a mere question and sometimes as a question of the meaning of the existence of this particular national feast, has often been raised in recent years, creating disagreements and often interpretations of « national fairy tales » on the one hand and « ethnicism » on the other.

But as is often the case, the answer to this question is in the past.

They write « THE NEWS » of 24o March 1951:

« As a day of celebration of the national holiday, the first year of the year was raised, because on that day of 1822 the official proclamation of independence was made by the people’s proxies. »

From 1823 to 1837, there was no national holiday for the Greeks for the Greekso March, but of 1o January.

But in 1838 that changed. On March 15 of that year, a royal decree was issued according to which:

« On the proposal of the day on the ecclesiastical etc. Secretariat,

They thought that the day of March 25th, in itself, in itself Greek for this day on the feast of the Annunciation, they are brilliantly and joyous for this day on the start of the day of independence, the day of the day of the Greek. The Secretariat was published to publish and active this Decree. «

In fact, according to the same report by « NEWS », 25or March 1838, set up in downtown Athens, by the world, dance. Suddenly an old man appeared, « with great surprise for everyone, he is looking for a dancing Syria.

« And because she saw that everyone was looking at her strangely, she said, » I have the right to draw my dance too, because for the freedom I gave us my monk and two brothers « was the Athenian Archontissa Leka, whose name honors one of the main streets. »

As is also written by the great KH. Dimara in March 1967 « The long discussions about when the old Patron German blessed the banner, about the events that preceded or followed. These are all very useful, as is useful for any chronological reversal, but they have no organic relationship with the national holiday. «
