Marcelo points out “Last Possession of the Mandate”

The President of the Republic pointed out that this Friday had the « last inauguration of the term », which ends in March next year.

“It is done, the last inauguration of the term,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on the departure of the National Palace of Ajuda, in Lisbon, where the 43 secretaries of state of the XXV Constitutional Government took place.

On Thursday, in the late afternoon, the prime minister and 16 ministers of the second executive PSD/CDS-PP took place at the same place. This was the fourth executive that the current president of the Republic took office and the second coalition PSD/CDS-PP headed by Luís Montenegro, after two PS governments with António Costa as Prime Minister.

The head of state, who took office on 9 March 2016 and ends his second term on the same day of 2026, decreed the dissolution of Parliament three times. None of the previous three executives to which he gave possession has reached the end.

When he had been in office for more than three years, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa first gave an executive inauguration, the XXII Constitutional Government, consisting of 19 ministers and 50 secretaries of state, on October 26, 2019. This was a minority executive of the PS.

After his first dissolution of the Assembly of the Republic, due to the lead of the state budget, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa gave inauguration the new government of the PS, which with absolute majority won the early legislative elections of January 30, 2022.

The process was delayed by the repetition of elections in the European circle, determined by the Constitutional Court. On March 30, 2022, Marcelo inaugurated to the XXIII Constitutional Government, composed of 17 ministers and 38 secretaries of state.

In January 2024, following the resignation of António Costa as Prime Minister, because of Operation Influencer, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa decreed a new dissolution of Parliament and summoned early legislatives to March 10.

On April 2, he took office to the PSD president, Luís Montenegro, as prime minister, and the 17 ministers of the XXIV Constitutional Government. Its third dissolution of Parliament, with early legislatures called on May 18 this year, was decreed due to the fall of the minority government PSD/CDS-PP.

The government presented a motion of trust that was rejected in Parliament with votes against PS, arrives, BE, PCP, Livre and PAN, during a political crisis that arose because of a family business of the Prime Minister, Spinumviva, but passed on to children.
