An elderly woman with her car destroyed six graves at the cemetery in Kerksken, part of Haaltert. « It’s not just about material damage, this also hurts emotionally, » says one of the relatives.

The woman drove her car into the cemetery and lost control of the wheel. Why she drove there and how exactly it went wrong is not clear. Afterwards she was taken to the hospital in shock and with slight injuries. Police Commissioner Wim van Vaerenbergh confirms this.

« It hurts the photo to see next to the destroyed grave »

According to people who came to look at the havoc, it is not the first time that the woman drives her car in the cemetery. « It happened regularly that she did not park in the planned parking spaces, but rode her car to the grave that she wanted to visit. »

« She recently received a warning that it is forbidden to drive the car in the cemetery, but early on Monday morning it happened again, probably because she thought nobody would see it, » said visitors to the cemetery.

Mayor Phaedra van Keymolen (CD&V) is impressed by the accident. « In the first place, it is not intended that visitors to the cemetery will ride their car in the cemetery, » she says. « We understand that this hurts the relatives. As far as material damage is concerned, we have now started a procedure to restore the six affected graves through the insurance, but we cannot keep looking at the destroyed graves in the meantime. »

That is why Van Keymolen promises to ensure that the graves, in anticipation of a definitive repair, are being restored for the time being, « so that people can visit their loved ones without being confronted with the sight of the destroyed graves. »
