An 80-year-old man was seriously injured at the Leuven bus station on Friday afternoon. He was taken to the hospital.
The accident happened on Friday around 4.45 pm near the bus quays at Leuven station. The eighties would have crossed the green pedestrian strips there, when a bus rode onto the platform. “The man was hit by the bus when he drove the bus quay and fell. He ended up under the bus and was seriously injured on the legs, « confirms police spokesman Marc Vranckx.
According to witnesses, the victim was heavily bloody. He was provided by the emergency services on site, and then taken to the hospital by ambulance. He would not be in danger.
The correct circumstances of the accident are still being investigated, but according to the first findings the man walked on the strips for pedestrians. The bus driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs. « The camera images of the station are looked up to bring more clarity, » says Vranckx.
The fact is that safety at the bus station has been under discussion for some time, not least since an Indian doctoral student died a year ago after a collision by a bus. A few months ago the signage around the bus station was clarified and repainted. (HSB)
