A 72-year-old man died on Tuesday in an accident in the Ekerse Putten. The man was diving with a friend when he suddenly got into trouble. The victim was still resuscitated, but unfortunately help could no longer benefit.

The incident happened around 9.30 am. Eyewitnesses heard a diver calling for help. They saw how the diver dragged his buddy out of the water and immediately notified the emergency services. The bystanders started the resuscitation, which was taken over by the medical services.

Unfortunately, help could no longer benefit. The man died on the spot. « The victim is a 72-year-old man from Ekeren, » confirms spokesperson Kim Bastiaens of the Antwerp police. What exactly was wrong, is not yet clear. The police have started an investigation into the circumstances.

The large well in Ekeren, the largest of the two ponds in the Muisbroek nature reserve, is a popular destination for divers. There is a swimming ban, but divers can keep their exercises there. The lake between the District Ekeren and the port of Antwerp has a depth of about twenty meters. In the past, fatal accidents with swimmers and divers have already happened.
