Magari: Request to declare the village in an emergency mode

Autopsy in the village of Magarikari, which has severe geotechnical problems, with cracks in houses, roads and infrastructure, was carried out by OASP President and Dynamic Tectonic & Applied Geology Professor, Dr. Efthimios Lekkas, found in the area accompanied by the mayor PhaistrusMr. Grigoris Nikolidakis, the Vice Mayors Mr. Yiannis Fassomytakis and Mr. George Dispyrakis, the President of the Local Community Mr. Michalis Mavrakis and residents.

It is a fact that many buildings are now non -habitable, with Mr Lekka attributing the catastrophes to the geological composition of the subsoil and the incomplete drainage of rainwater, describing the phenomenon as « creepy ». In addition, the professor stressed the need to complete the drainage work that began in 1985. «

During the visit, Mr Lekkas found that 70% of homes were damaged due to deformations and fragments, while a slip surface was found at a depth of 11 meters, which makes the settlement in a state of movement.

To date, four official studies have been carried out (1978 (IGME), 2020 (Region of Crete), 2021 (EKPA) and 2023 (Phaistos Municipality Technical Service), all with a common conclusion, high geological risk, active and evolving landslide, newlyweding, soil.

The request

The Municipality of Phaistos, at its request to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, calls for the immediate declaration of Magarikari in an emergency to activate intervention mechanisms, as well as to find funding for the completion of the drainage project, which remains unfinished for 40 years, Of course support measures for residents so that they do not have to leave their country.

The Mayor of Phaistos, Mr. Grigoris Nikolidakis said:

« The carpenter should not be abandoned. We have scientific data and we will do the right to « reborn » the settlement. We will not allow our villages to be deserted. We need immediate interventions, technical and financial support so that residents can stay in their place. It is time for the state to stand up to the circumstances. «
