Maduro Party / Day won the opposition boycotted Venezuela elections
Maduro has been in power in Venezuela since 2013. In July last year, the presidential election took place in the country, where Maduro was again announced. However, the National Election Council did not publish a detailed vote. The opposition published results from polling stations, which testified to the convincing victory of opposition candidate Edmundo Gonsales.
The opposition, with the exception of a small part, boycotted the elections on Sunday, believing that membership would legitimize Maduro’s claims to power and his government’s repressive apparatus.
According to official results, the ruling Socialist Party won 23 of the 24 governors’ seats and received 82.68% of the vote in the National Assembly elections.
News agency AFP journalists observed that election activity was much lower than in the presidential election last July. The Election Council reported that voter turnout slightly exceeded 42%.
Shortly before the elections, more than 70 people, including prominent opposition leaders, were arrested by the authorities, and accused them of conspiracy to sabotage the elections.
