Macedonian mayor and Bulgarian investor argue after pollution of a river with heavy metals
Mayor of Kriva Palanka Sashko Mitovski warned that the water in the Kriva River, on which the Macedonian city was spread, is seriously polluted and cannot be used for anything. The reason for his comment was new data, whose summary he announced, from a state institution, who, in his opinion, confirmed that there was cyanide and lead in the water.
Yesterday, Mitovski, who is from the Social Democrats (SDSM, who managed until last year), said the municipality had received results from a second analysis of the Institute for Public Health at the request of the Mrena Fisheries Society, confirming independent studies for heavy metal pollution, lead and cyanide.
Mitovski has previously criticized state institutions, including the line ministry, for their inadequate reactions and for an attempt to hide the truth from the public.
Analysis
In the middle of March, for the first time, pictures with a cloudy color of the water in the Kriva River appeared. According to the new analysis, data from which are disclosed from Mitovski, but which is not available publicly, 36.65 micrograms per liter of lead at 10 micrograms, 188 micrograms of manganese at a limit of 50, 113 icrograms of zinc at 100, 2.158 cadmium at 0.1 are found in the water in the curve river. This is the worst category of water according to the State Institute. Its turbidity is estimated at 170 units at 10 limit value.
Investigation of fire in cobs caught up with previous government, the tragedy is already politicized
Another analysis of Technolab Laboratory, in his opinion, confirms the assessment. Previous report by the Institute of Public Health, according to the institution, does not speak of the presence of cyanide, but of a certain concentration of lead, zinc, cadmium and manganese.
Firing
The topic also entered the national agenda with the approaching local elections in northern Macedonia, which are likely to be in the middle or late October and for which, until recently, comments in Skopje were muted due to the memory of the tragedy in Kochani with 59 casualties. Gradually, however, the topic returned to the agenda, while the UDSM, the party of which it is Mitkovski, offers to the ruling VMRO -DPMNE joint support for an independent candidate in Kochani, and in the Albanian coalition partner the halen of Christian Mickski, they allow the vote separately.
Comment from the Ministry of Environment, attacked by Mitovski, is forthcoming; The prosecutor’s office is being triggered by Lupcho Yoveko appointed by the Social Democrats before passing power after a catastrophic loss (the removal procedure was suspended in the course of the fire investigation in Kochani with 59 casualties in March).
From the eco -inspection is knownthat Bulmak 2016 may have to pay a fine (a maximum value of 10 thousand euros) – ie, according to the inspection, there is a violation for which the company can be punished, in connection with an accident, the fact that it does not deny. Bulmak, however, set out evidence that claims to prove the lack of a cause and effect. |
Even before the mayor’s last commentary, Bulmak 2016 director Tony Tonevski said the mayor « maybe somehow promoted politically », but his strategy was wrong.
What does Bulmak say
The company denies being related to the case. At a press conference on Wednesday, representatives of Bulmak 2016 assured that in the event of a technical problem in the mine, they reacted according to the protocols and the tests showed a concentration of cyanide below the limit values. They called on the institutions to find out why the river became more dark without panic.
It is only confirmed that a one -time technical problem has occurred regarding the defect of the pipes, which is why water from the shafts in the flotation (the process of removing desired minerals and compounds from the mine to the surface), but the damage is eliminated. It is alleged that the leakage took place hours before the clouding was recorded (the leak was only an hour and a half, from 7 in the morning, and in the river the problem was registered at 11 am, and clouding was visible at 6 pm). Experts took samples from Toranichka River after the accident before flowing into the river curve. |
If a certain concentration of lead (52 micrograms at 32 permissible) is reported in the Toranich River, although in the « mine zone », but the cyanides were below 10 micrograms per liter (at 100); 10 micrograms could not even be found in a laboratory. The concentration is responsible, according to the subsequent secondary analysis, the class and the category given to the work mine.

In the drinking, according to Tonevski’s explanation, it is permissible to have 50 micrograms of cyanide per liter.
