Alcohol is already banned from the parliamentary bar in the Flemish Parliament, but not yet in the Federal Parliament. A good thing, says N-VA MP Maaike de Vreese. « When will there be a glass there? On Thursday evening, after a long session. Why should you not be allowed to drink a glass of beer or wine? There are still people who drink something after work, » says De Vreese in an interview with the newspaper of West Flanders.

The interview with De Vreese continues, coincidentally or not, in the Brugse Brewery De Halve Maan. The N-VA’ster also emphasizes that the parliamentaries get to the chat with people from other parties thanks to alcohol. « That is part of our culture. If someone wants to drink a coke or an alcohol -free beer, that is just as good. But if you would no longer donate alcohol, chances are that the groups will each go to a cafe separately. Then you will no longer have an exchange between parties. »
Whether the federal parliament with the bar does not set the bad example and a drink? « I don’t think, » says De Vreese. « I assume that whoever sits here is responsible enough not to drink during the day. Yes, there have been exceptions in the past. Of course that is not possible. (Carefully) but were that not people who needed help? Their problem is not solved if you scrap the alcohol here. »
