Luxembourg’s footballers create the climb

Cheers with the Red Lionesses: Luxembourg’s football women climb into the league B of the Nations League. The team around captain Laura Miller achieved success through a 3-1 away win against Kazakhstan. She turned the game on Tuesday after a half -time residue and defended the lead in the group three of the league C.

The Luxembourgers had traveled to Asia for the last group game. The game took place in the central stadium in Almaty over 23,000 visitors.

National coach Dan Santos changed the starting line -up compared to the home duel on Friday against Armenia (2-0) to two positions. Leticia Mateus played in defense for the battered Leila Schmit. Vera Villegas replaced striker Joana Lourenco, who had to stay in Luxembourg because of her final exams.

Earlier red card

Important decisions were made in the initial phase of the game. Kazakhstan’s Kazyna Norbayeva brought the rushing Caroline Jorge down in the penalty area and saw red (6th ‘). Instead of a penalty, Luxembourg was awarded a free kick from around 17 meters. Marta Estevez ‘shot missed the goal (7th’).

Instead of keeping capital out of the majority, the FLF selection fell behind a little later. Karina Zhumabaikyzy converted a free kick to 1-0 for the hosts (15th ‘). The Luxembourgers had goal chances through Villegas (19th ‘), Charlotte Schmit (24th’) and Amy Thompson (43. ‘), but could no longer do the balance before the break.

Shortly after the change of sides, Miller scored 1-1. The captain scored a goal from a short distance (51. ‘) after the previously strong Kazakh goalkeeper Nazym Ismailova had not been able to hold an Estevez free kick.

The imposed Kimberley dos Santos had her team cheered again with the next goal seven minutes later (58. ‘). Substitute Anna Miny ensured the 3-1 final score in added time (90th+3rd ‘). It was the fifth victory in a row for the unbeaten Luxembourg women.
