Luxembourg falls in tenth in the LGBTIQ+ranking
Now Luxembourg is in tenth. In the ranking of the « Rainbow Map », which is the situation of LGBTIQ+-Meemen analyzed in 49 countries, the Grand Duchy has slipped down by three stages, as from the Report of the Ilga Europe organization emerges.
« We are currently experiencing a situation in which rights that many of us have taken for granted are currently being experienced by anti -democratic forces, » writes Yuriko Backes (DP), Minister for Equality and Diversity, in a press release on Friday.
Yuriko Backes: Equality is in danger
Luxembourg borders on Belgium, Germany and Denmark on the table. Behind the Grand Duchy are France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
How does Luxembourg cut off?
« It is not about creating new rights, but about guaranteeing everyone the same rights, » says the DP Minister.
Luxembourg has improved considerably since 2013 in the ILGA report. There was a big leap from 2019 to 2020, but since then the situation has deteriorated again.
One reason why Luxembourg fell in the ranking could be that various criteria of the league have not yet been implemented in the Grand Duchy. One criterion is, for example, that the recognition of sexual orientation and gender identity must be anchored in the constitution. This is not the case at the moment.
« Homophobic people actually just ask for help »
Overall, the league analyzes seven categories to evaluate the situation of LSBTIQ+ in the countries. The first category deals with anti -discrimination laws. The “Family” category is about recognizing and protecting the equality of marriage. Civil society category is about the unrestricted exercise of the rights of LGBTIQ+persons in society. In the asylum law category, among other things, it is examined whether sexual orientation is a criterion for asylum applications.
