Luxembourg bundles its defense skills | Luxembourg word
Against the background of an international situation characterized by geopolitical instability, which requires a increase in European investments in the defense area, the Chamber of Commerce and the Defense Sectors’ companies have decided to establish Luxdefence ASBL, a national association of defense companies.
This foundation is a continuation of the Lux4defence initiative, which was noted by the Prime Minister in his speech on the situation of the nation on May 13, 2025, as the Chamber of Commerce announced on Monday.
This new initiative is intended to structure and represent an emerging industrial ecosystem at a time when Luxembourg has committed to spend two percent of its PIB for defense.
Create framework for coordination, collaboration and representation
According to the official announcement, it became essential for national companies to « create a framework for coordination, cooperation and representation ». Against this background, Luxembourgian companies that already work in the areas of defense, security or dual technologies had decided to join in Luxdefence.
This new structure in the form of a non -profit organization should become an important player at national and European level.
The foundation is the direct implementation of the Lux4defence initiative, which was launched by the Chamber of Commerce and presented the government at the end of March 2025, in particular one of the most important recommendations for the strategy report: Defense companies should be able to merge in order to strengthen their coordination, visibility and ability to participate in large -scale projects from European scope.
The defense sector in Luxembourg is still young, but is based on recognized technological know-how.
« In view of a changing strategic environment in which European cooperation in the defense area increases and the need for sovereign technologies is explosive, the establishment of Luxdefence reflects the common will of all members: to build up a defense ecosystem in Luxembourg and to make a contribution at European level, » emphasizes André Wilmes, the first president of Luxdefence.
A strategic sector under construction
The defense sector in Luxembourg is still young, but is based on recognized technological know-how and mountains a great economic potential. « The challenges of technological sovereignty and industrial resilience have become significant at European level. »
Due to its agile and innovative positioning, Luxembourg has a role in the consolidation of a competitive industrial and technological defense base, ”says Carlo Thelen, General Director of the Chamber of Commerce and Secretary of Luxdefence.

So far, the skills for joint action, the bundling of skills and the representation of companies compared to national and international institutions have been insufficiently funded due to the lack of a formal coordination structure.
Trustworthy partner of the government
In order to do justice to this need, « Luxdefence was officially founded. The association wants to become a trustworthy partner of the government, a strategic instrument that is available to maximize the economic yield of the country’s defense efforts. »
Luxdefence can also merging with international institutions to permanently integrate Luxembourg company into the large European and transatlantic value chains in the defense area.
